The Seven Rila Lakes — a place where nature touches the soul.
There are places no photo can hold. The Seven Rila Lakes are exactly that — majestic Rila, the crystal-clear lakes and the panoramas unfolding at every step remind you just how beautiful Bulgaria is.
We left Burgas early, because the mountain doesn’t wait. The lift from Panichishte takes you up to the Rila Lakes hut in minutes — and that’s where the real thing begins.
The Route
The classic loop passes by all seven lakes, each with its own name and character: the Tear, the Eye, the Kidney, the Twin, the Trefoil, the Fish Lake and the Lower Lake. The full circuit takes four to five hours at an easy pace — with frequent stops, because you’ll want a photo at every step.
The weather changes constantly. In the mountains, always bring extra layers!
The most powerful moment? The climb to Ezeren Peak, where all seven lakes come into view at once. You stand there, the wind pushing against you, and below you seven mirrors glitter, scattered across the mountain.
Practical Tips
- Start early — clouds often roll in over the lakes in the afternoon and the panorama disappears
- Dress in layers — even in July it’s chilly up top, and the weather can turn in minutes
- Water and food — there’s nowhere to eat along the route past the hut
- The lift saves 2+ hours of climbing — it runs year-round, but check the schedule
If you have just one free weekend this summer — give it to Rila. You won’t regret it.
