My visit to Sapareva Banya was a real treat. The little town won me over with its clean air, calm atmosphere and beautiful nature at the foot of Rila — and right in the middle of its center, something happens that exists nowhere else on the continent.
This is home to the hottest geyser in continental Europe: mineral water at 103°C, erupting from a depth of nearly 500 meters. You stand just meters from the fountain, steam rising over the square, while all around you a perfectly quiet mountain afternoon rolls on.
What to See
- The geyser fountain — the town’s symbol, right in the center
- The mineral baths and spa complexes — perfect after a mountain hike
- The Nikolay Haytov monument and the old church of St. Nicholas
- A walk through the park — fresh mountain air and benches with a view
The Perfect Combination
Sapareva Banya is the starting point for the Seven Rila Lakes and the Rilska Skakavitsa waterfall. My formula: morning in the mountains, afternoon in the warm mineral pools. There’s no better way to end a hike.
About 70 kilometers from Sofia, the town makes an easy weekend trip even in winter — that’s when the contrast between the snow and the boiling water is even more striking.
