Rusokastro Fortress

A place I hadn’t visited in years.

It sits about 30 km from Burgas, near the little village of Rusokastro.

So much has changed since my last visit.

They’ve added gazebos, a playground, and a small scale model that helps you picture what the fortress looked like back in the day.

This is where medieval Bulgaria won its last great military victory. In 1332, Tsar Ivan Alexander crushed the armies of the Byzantine emperor Andronikos III near Rusokastro.
