On the streets of Wrocław you can spot hundreds of little bronze gnomes – more than 600 of them! The first one, the 40-centimeter ‘Papa Gnome’, appeared in 2001, and the ‘colony’ has been growing steadily ever since.
Their story is a fascinating one: the gnomes are actually a symbol of the Orange Alternative, an anti-communist movement from the 1980s that used humor and satire to stand up to the regime. At first they were painted on the streets, and later they came to life as sculptures.
