Cenote

Cenote — the largest underwater cave in the world. From the Yucatec Maya dzonot or ts’onot, meaning ‘well’ — a deep, wide pit in the ground of karst origin, round in shape and filled with water.

The water in cenotes is usually exceptionally clear, since it is essentially rainwater filtered slowly through the earth.

Cenotes were the only source of fresh drinking water for the Maya.
